It also makes me wonder if there are tell-tales in his earlier background (e.g., college years). I say this because there's a "chicken vs. egg" element at play.

Was he sympathetic to the Communist regime before he first went there, or somehow "just happened" to visit, and then got recruited to eventually graduate into "elite captured." (I suspect groomed / recruited before first traveling there.)

Finally, I like your moniker "Tiananmen Tim" even more than what I came up with ("Wuhan Walz").

Walz's roots are in Germany. That 1989 visit was a teaching position with the WorldTeach in Foshan No. 1 High School in Guangdon, China. He and wife ran Education Travel Adventures, which took high school students on summer education trips to China.
