In the details I worked with the Secret Service counter snipers, they had every building, high point, likely sniper position pre-identified and, during the event, either manned by Secret Service or local police or covered by their Counter Sniper teams. The police department for which I worked would turn out 1000+ officers for a presidential visit. Even a slightly opened window was noted and investigated or covered. As an aside, the Secret Service counter snipers qualified monthly at 1000 yards. Their groups had to be less than 10" under all conditions. It should be noted that in the 2nd assassination attempt in Florida, a Secret Service agent shot at the would be assassin who was approximately 400 yards away and missed; perhaps a hard shot for an ordinary shooter, but not for Secret Service shooters of old. The guys with whom I worked were the best of the best and were extraordinarily serious about their job.

The first information identified the shooter as a registered Republican kid with no known political history. REALLY!? A wannabe shooter kid with an AR takes numerous shots from 130 yds. and the Secret Service can't prevent that? I certainly understand that a shooter who is willing to sacrifice his life can defeat the best protection, but the level of protection should be capable of stopping a kid with an off the rack AR who is seen by people in the crowd with a rifle less than 150 yards from the protectee at least 20 minutes before he even fires his first shots. Local law enforcement reported they notified the Secret Service, but the Secret Service couldn't stop him? I wonder how many of the outer perimeter detail were really serious about their jobs and chosen for their competency or, of more significance, how many were in their position because they met some goofy DEI standard.
In the end the Trump’s being shot became the shot heard round the world. Instead of a dead contender for the most powerful position in the world, that shooting helped Trump capture that position. The standard plan usually involves three rings of security. The agents are trained to protect the person of the President or whoever their protectee is at all costs and by any means. One question asked but not yet answered is was the kid the only shooter? Was the plan to create a riot and then engage other shooters? The counter sniper who shot the kid (or at least his rifle) seemed to have no problem seeing him after eight shots. Why not before any shots? The presence of the shooter was brought to the attention of LE and SS people well before Trump ever took the stage. Why was he allowed to even take the stage? The errors just go one to the point one must ask "was this carelessness or part of a willful plan?" The entire protective detail and all the supervisors up to the head of the SS should have been summarily discharged and arrested, pending investigation of malfeasance and willful intent. Then there is the most basic of all questions, why was that site even considered in the first place? It was far too open and there were numerous elevated and open line of sight structures.
I am personally much more concerned about resolving this issue than the gallons of ink being spilled over Epstein. Of course there is a list and the odds he committed unassisted suicide are remote. A man died and presidential candidate was spared by a miracle and the result is suspensions? The entire protection plan was incompetent. The secret service is decades behind in available technologies, communications systems, and training. Everyone involved with that plan should be fired or reassigned to the mail room.
