On August 7, 1998, Al Qaeda attacked two U.S. embassies in East Africa. Two hundred and twenty-four people died in the blasts, including 12 Americans, and more than 4,500 people were wounded. On October 12, 2000, Al Qaeda almost sank the USS Cole. Suicide terrorists exploded a small boat alongside the ship as it was refueling in the Yemeni port of Aden. The blast ripped a 40-foot-wide hole near the waterline of the Cole, killing 17 American sailors and injuring many more.
